ABYSS

Turn-Based Strategy Game

An intrepid group of adventurers, creatures of all shapes and types, have fallen into a mysterious chasm during their search for the legendary treasure. With no other options, they delve deeper into the caverns but are confronted with monstrous creatures beyond their understanding. Take command, build your team, beat the monsters, and escape the abyss.

Start Screen

My Role

I was the Environmental Artist on this team, and my responsibilities were:

  • Creating background illustrations to reflect the player's descent

  • Working with our Sound Designer to create an otherworldly atmosphere

  • Creating our tile map sprites

  • Illustrating and animating our Start Screen, Ending Screen, and Game Over screen

  • Creating our intro and outro cinematics

  • Assisting with character art

Illustrations

The stage backgrounds change as the player progresses through the game to create an immersive environment for our gameplay. I took inspiration from deep-sea ecology, referencing real-life flora and fauna to create these backgrounds. Our main characters are cute land animals to make them stand out against the aquatic and alien themes of the abyss.

Tile Map

Our tile map is a cave floor that collapses after every battle. My biggest challenge was creating clear designs that conveyed the game's mechanics to the player. For example, a tile that crumbles mid-battle must show that it is unstable and dangerous.
